We were recently invited to share Spare Harvest in a blog on the My Deal website.  Ally crafted a great article and we wanted to share it with you.  Here is the link to the original blog post – https://www.mydeal.com.au/blog/post/5-garden-essentials

Owning a garden can be hard work, you have to commit constant time, energy and effort to make it look nice and neat. If you’re short on time, or you’re short on space, you can rely on these five tricks that will make your garden look great, no matter the size of your garden. These tips are not only foolproof, they won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Go Green
If your backyard or outdoor space doesn’t have room for grass or your backyard is tiled, there’s a perfect solution. Fake it ‘til you make it by laying down artificial grass. Easy to maintain and looks great, artificial grass is the perfect go-to for those who love a low maintenance garden, or who don’t have the space or resources to install a lawn. If you can’t find something you’re looking for, you can always head to Spare Harvest, where you can “…find plants, compost, green waste, food scraps, seeds, pots, cutting, spare land and gardening tips. Your community may have what you are looking for. It could even be free.” Follow Spare Harvest on Facebook and Instagram.

Storage
It doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is, you need to store away those unsightly shovels and lawn mowers somewhere. If you leave your gardening tools out in the open, it doesn’t exactly make a garden look any prettier. If you incorporate a shed into your backyard, you can easily store away all of your tools, and make your garden look neat and tidy. Plus, you won’t be tripping over shovels or rakes if you store them away. It’s a win-win.

Depth Of Field
The perfect isn’t just green, it’s an array of shades and colours. Whether you add in some flowers, tiles or just brightly coloured wall, a splash of colour can really up the ante in your garden, adding depth and individuality to your greenery. If you’re not convinced or don’t want to introduce a separate colour into the mix, you should consider injecting deeper shades of green, which can be done with varied plant life. You can also add depth to your garden by incorporating cement and neutral tones to your garden. The pop of green against the neutral shades will make your garden look full of life.

If You Can’t Grow Out, Grow Up
Sometimes you just don’t have room to grow a garden, which is totally fine. If you would like to have some green outside, but can’t afford the time or space, you should consider a vertical garden. For an extremely low maintenance alternative, you should consider artificial plants. Garden Beet offers the perfect alternative if you love the look of a vertical garden. But hate the work behind one.”Install an artificial green wall. Garden Beet’s Meadow Patch is the finest indoor/outdoor artificial vertical garden available in Australia. Meadow Patch is comprised of lifelike artificial plants. Simple to maintain requires no water, feeding or sunlight. It will look spectacular for years to come.” You can follow Garden Beet on Instagram and Facebook.

Do The Monster Mulch
If your garden is looking a little patchy or muddled, it may be a good idea to keep things nice and tidy with the help of mulch. Soil scientist, Alisa Bryce has some foolproof advice for those who have a patchy garden. “Patchy turf can be an eyesore in backyards. In areas of high foot traffic, low light, or tree root competition, turf will struggle to grow. For a quick fix, mark out the area in a nice design and fill it in with either pavers or mulch. If using an organic mulch (e.g. bark), ensure it has been properly composted. Inorganic mulches like coloured pebbles can also be very attractive.“ Follow Alisa for more tips and tricks on her Facebook

Your garden is a place to relax, unwind and enjoy. It doesn’t have to be the biggest garden, or the most pruned, but it should reflect you. Despite there being some basic rules to follow, don’t forget that it’s your garden, your rules.
